Women’s volleyball digs in

A quick 2-0 set lead for the Assumption Women’s Volleyball team was not enough, as Southern New Hampshire slipped by in 5 sets with the 3-2 set victory at Laska Gymnasium on Wednesday, September 14. The Greyhounds had everything working for the first two sets, winning 25-21 in the first and 25-18 in the second, before losing the 3 and 4 sets by identical 2-point margins (25-23). The third set was not as close, as Assumption lost by 7 points, the largest point margin of the match.

The Greyhounds with a 1 and 6 record have had a tough start to the season under first-year head coach Elyse Rowland—who played collegiately at Northeast-10 foe Pace University from 2009-2012.

Sophomore Kellie Smith and first-year Zara Velez led the Hounds as Smith had 16 kills and 14 digs to go along with Valez’s 12 kills and 16 digs. Junior Olivia Burke also added 11 kills of her own and had a team-high seven blocks while her teammate, junior Maria Chrisom, had 30 digs to lead the Assumption defense. Junior Kiki Romanik rounded out the notable performances, recording 45 assists, 17 digs and six kills at the setter position.

Southern New Hampshire University is 2-9 on the season, having also come out of the gate slow. Jaclyn Maguire and Joanne Coffey led the Pemmen. Maguire had 16 kills and 16 digs with Coffey contributing 47 assists, 21 digs, 5 kills and 3 serving aces.

Even with quality numbers from individuals on both sides, it was a competitive game overall as both teams matched each other in kills with 61. SNHU bested Assumption’s .168 hitting percentage with a .192 mark, and had for more digs than the Greyhounds 101-97, though Assumption outperformed SNHU in aces 10 to 4 and blocks 10 to 5. Assumption had better hitting percentages in the first two sets .229-.167, .231-.132, before SNHU came alive and had a match-best .349 percentage. The 4 and 5 sets were not as clean for both teams, with Assumption scoring less than .100 in both sets .083, -.042 while SNHU outlasted the Greyhounds .100, .208.

While Wednesday night’s match did not start conference play for either team, Assumption will open conference play against New Haven on Sept. 17 at home before traveling to Southern Connecticut State on Sept. 20. To follow the Greyhounds Volleyball team, log on to assumptiongreyhounds.com.
