On Wednesday, April 18, Assumption faculty and students congregated in the Hagan Campus Center Hall to discuss acceptance of the gay and lesbian community. The panel of eight speakers was made up of six staff members and two students and was moderated by Professor Linda Ammonds.

Every year a subcommittee of the Board of Trustees called "Honorary Degree and Naming of Buildings," selects the Commencement speaker for Assumption College. The committee solicits nominations from Trustees, Assumption faculty and staff, the Alumni Board and Class Agents from each alumni class.

On Tuesday April 8, many students, parents and faculty members gathered in the Salon in Maison to recognize the achievements of several groups of history students. The annual induction ceremony for Phi Alpha Theta, the history honors society, was just one of many events put on by the group this year.

Many of us on campus were deeply disturbed by the email from Mr. Paul Murano to the college community on April 2 in which he cited two Catholic bishops on voting on human life issues, while inviting people to attend a meeting of Assumption Advocates for Life.

The last issue of the Provocateur (April 9) carried two contributions to a growing dialogue about a question most Catholic colleges are wrestling with in this twenty-first century after the birth of Jesus Christ, namely, "What is a Catholic college?" In one contribution, several faculty members responded to an earlier article about actions taken by the new president with regard to the AC Allies club.

Library has red carpet event

With a red carpet sprawled down on the first floor of the D'Alzon Library, it seemed as if Tinsel Town had renovated Assumption College. As part of the National Library Week events, the library staff and an advanced television production class debuted a series of "instructo-mercials," commercials created to boost information about the library, while showing the many different resources the library can offer.

President Cesareo, Dr. Beadle looking forward to next year

Barbale a jack-of-all-trades for Greyhound baseball

Junior Jeff Barbale is holding nothing back for the 2008 baseball season: on April 15, in a game against Stonehill, he hit the twelfth triple for his college career, breaking the prior record of eleven.

Though the team has a 15-24 record for the season (as of 4/20), Barbale has high hopes after their win against Stonehill.

Klaskin brothers turning AC lacrosse into a family affair

As if one wasn't enough, the Klaskin brothers have combined to create a dominant duo for the Assumption men's lacrosse team over the past two years under head coach Mark Kelley.

Matt, a senior, and his brother, Kevin, a sophomore at Assumption began their lacrosse playing careers at a young age due to an older neighbor who kidded with them about playing lacrosse to the point where they gave in and put down the football they always tossed around.

Catch one Assumption baseball game and you cannot help but notice the tall starter mounted on the pitcher's mound. The surprise is not in his skill - that would be expected of any starting pitcher. What is shocking is that he is only a sophomore, and not only the starting pitcher but one of the team's three captains as well.

A Work in Progress

Eight long months ago in my first column I said, "A work in progress is anything unfinished, progressing toward betterment." Much has been said in recent weeks and months here at Assumption questions concerning academic freedom and the Catholic intellectual tradition. From people concerned that their freedom of speech is being curtailed at Assumption, there's been a very free-flowing torrent of speech, much of it murky and some of it downright disingenuous.

In celebration of National Poetry Month, the English department is sponsoring the "Wednesdays in April" faculty reading series for the last three weeks in April. All of the readings will be held in the Alden Trust Auditorium, Kennedy 112, at 4:00 p.m.

On April 16, Professor John Hyland read poetry, accompanied by Professor Michael Land reading his memoir, tentatively titled Travel in Dog Years.

AC Upstage's Into the Woods is a hit with audience

AC Upstage presented Into the Woods, a Stephen Sondheim musical on April 16-20. It was directed by Brian Tivnan and choreographed by Jennifer Agbay. I got the chance to go on opening night and was pleasantly surprised at how well-put together this performance was.

Tour Choir to perform at Assumption this spring

On Sunday, May 4 at 2 p.m. in the Chapel of the Holy Spirit, the Chapel Choir will be putting on a concert, "Rejoice and be Glad!" This concert will be free of admission, and feature a selection of songs that the choir will sing in their upcoming tour in May, when they will travel to New York City and Washington D.
