The Winter Track Team is ready for its upcoming season. Head Coach Mark Perrone feels very strongly about what lies ahead for the team.
"We had a great season last year and are expecting the same this year," said Perrone. "We had a great recruiting year and that will help us with the season ahead. We are very solid with sprinters, jumpers, throwers, our distance running, and our relays."
Assumption will be spreading out everyone they have in order to create a very powerful team. "We can use everyone in as many events as we want. This way we can spread everyone out and load people up on relays," said Perrone. "We have a lot of depth and size up good with the rest of our competition. Pole-vaulting is a very weak event in the NE-10 and we have six people doing it. A lot of depth."
Perrone said that the team has improved on distance runners. "Last season we lost points with our distance running," commented Perrone. "We are solid with the men and women and again, have that depth to spread out our talent."
Assumption has been invited to this year's indoor NE-10 competition, which Perrone feels is a good starting point for the team, and a good way to find other teams' weaknesses.
Sophomore Rob Eaton said, "I think we have a really strong team this season. I am really hoping for a league championship." Eaton currently holds the Assumption track records for the 400-meter and 100 meters, and shares the record for the 4x400 meter and 4x100 meter relays.
Commenting on what will be the strong components of this year's team, Perrone said these components "...remain to be unseen. It is much too early to tell. Our pole-vaulters and throwers have been going to Holy Cross twice a week training for this upcoming season." Fittingly enough, the newest addition to the coaching staff, Alison LeBeau, was a standout athlete at the College of the Holy Cross. She brings her talent and experience as this year's pole vault and weight events coach.
In terms of this year's competition, Perrone feels they will be able to size up with their opponents. "We will need a little more strategy against UMass-Lowell, Stonehill, and Bentley, but should be able to keep up with them all."
In track, points are awarded to the top six finishers in a competition. First place receives 10 points; second place receives eight points, third receives six points, fourth receives four points, fifth receives two points, and sixth receives one point. "If we are in a competition against Bentley and they have the top finisher, but we have finishers in two, three, and four, then Bentley will get ten points, but we will get eighteen points," commented Perrone. "So with the talent we have spread out, we should be able to size up with any team."
Assumption is looking to make some noise this year and show everyone what they are capable of, especially from a team coming off a club sport. Assumption begins February 8th at Smith College, and then competes again on the 22nd at Southern Connecticut State University.
