On Wednesday, March 19th, Sigma Tau Delta- the National English Honor Society- held its International Convention in Cincinnati, Ohio at the Hyatt Regency Hotel. Assumption students arrived on Friday, March 21st to participate in the convention.

AC students in attendance were Seniors Kristina England and Elizabeth Pisarski, and Juniors Carlene Isham and Jackie Connolly. English Professor Dana Aspinall, Chair of the Alpha Zeta Beta chapter of Sigma Tau Delta, accompanied the four students to the convention, which concluded on Sunday, March 23rd.

Active Sigma Tau Delta alumni and student members were invited to submit original short fiction, poetry, and personal and analytical essays, which would be read aloud at the conference. The works were encouraged to focus on, or relate to, the convention's theme, "Ourselves Reflected."

"The convention was a really interesting experience," said Connolly. "I realized how sheltered New England can be because I heard varying viewpoints from writers all over the country."

As a refereed conference, students submitted their papers or creative writing to Kevin Stemmler, the Chair of the National Selection Committee, by December 15, 2002. Stemmler then sent a letter of acceptance or rejection back to the students.

"When I submitted my paper, I didn't know what to expect, but I was excited to hear that it had been accepted," said Pisarski. "I thought the conference would be a great chance to go to a different city and meet people from different parts of the country."

At the convention, each student became part of a panel of four to five featured readers. Panels were based upon the type of paper or creative writing the students had submitted. Students presented their work to an audience and were expected to answer all questions posed by audience members.

"At first, I didn't have many questions to answer," said Isham, "but then, as soon as one person asked a question, many others jumped on the band wagon, and I ended up having to answer some difficult questions."
