Dynamic Senior Duo Leads Golf

Issue date: 4/10/03 Section: Sports
As with every other spring sport at Assumption College, the Men's Golf Team is eager to get the season into full swing, no pun intended. As they wait for the snow to melt, these guys have been practicing their putting in their dorms, which are scattered across this campus. That is the sacrifice you make when you are a golfer living in New England.

For two of these seniors, it's the end of a four-year run as starters for the team. Those team members are Senior Co-Captains Eric Naglieri and Keith Baird.

Head Coach Tim Bibaud heavily recruited both Naglieri and Baird out of high school. "My time at Assumption was as good as it could have been thanks to Coach Bibaud and my teammates," said Baird.

Baird was a member of the Beford High School State Championship Team, and Naglieri was a top player from East Longmeadow. Coach Bibaud saw that the two could push Assumption towards conference championships. With both still pushing for championships and titles, Naglieri and Baird have become great friends along the way.

From the fall of 1999 to the present, Naglieri and Baird consistently earned All-Conference honors in the Northeast-10 conference. This has provided the team with a strong backbone.

Over his four-year stay at Assumption, Naglieri has received many honors for his ability to strike a little ball into a small hole. In 1999, Naglieri received the Northeast-10 Conference Freshman Player of the Year award. Mostly recently, in the fall season, he received the prestigious honor of New England Collegiate Player of the Year.

Looking back on the past four years at Assumption, Naglieri and Baird have been the top two players on the team. They were a driving force in leading the Assumption team to the NCAA Division II Regional Championship in the spring of 2002. Both finished well in the Championship. However, as a team, they were unable to advance to the next round.

"I can definitely see this team returning to the Regional Championships," declared Naglieri. After recent trip to Orange County in Florida over Spring Break, Naglieri and Baird are confident in returning to the NCAA Championships.
