Overall, the Blue & Whites went 6-4 for the month of March, 7-14 through April, and 2-4 for the first week of May. They finished the year with a 10 and 17 record in Northeast-10 play. This marks an improvement upon last year's disappointing 9-33 overall and 6-25 conference records, but it was not enough to score a berth in the playoffs for 2003.
Junior Co-Captain Tim Caouette was upbeat in spite of the team's lack of a playoff berth.
"We started off hot, but we cooled off towards the end of April," Caouette said. "We have a real tight group of guys this year and we hope to take that same feeling into next year."
Junior Co-Captain Steve Muscatello agreed.
"We've been making small strides over the past couple of years," he said. "We're headed in the right direction. With a decent incoming freshmen class, we can shoot for the playoffs next year."
The Hounds will lose only five players to the cap and gown this year: Post-Graduate Billy Bertrand; Post-Graduate Corey Phillips; Senior Tom Griffin, Senior Joe Sposato; and Senior Matt Landers.
Philips leaves with a 7-10 win-loss record and an Earned Run Average of 6.45 total over the 2000 - 2002 seasons. Griffin twirled a 6-10 win-loss record and an ERA of 7.63 over the same period of time. Bertrand, Second Baseman, racked up 84 RBIs and a batting average of .394 over those three years. Over the 2001 and 2002 seasons, Pitchers Sposato and Landers logged records of 3-5 and 1-9 and ERAs of 8.50 and 10.10, respectively.
Philips lead the Hounds' 2003 pitching staff with a season record of 8-2 and an ERA 2.74. Griffin was second behind Philips with a record of 0-5 and an ERA of 3.44. Bertrand batted in 33 runs over this season, for an average of .374. Landers improved over his previous seasons with a 1-1 record and an ERA of 6.85 in 2003. Sposato finished the season with a record of 0-1 and an ERA 16.71.
However, the team remains hopeful for next year's season.
"The playoffs are definitely a goal for next year," said Caoucette.
