Before attending Assumption College, where he was the captain of the basketball team his senior year, Paulauskas was a student and an athlete at St. John's in Shrewsbury.
After graduating from Assumption in 1967, Paulauskas went on to both teach and coach at the high school level. He returned to work at AC for a while, spent some time in the Army, and then joined the Saint Anselm College team, where he was the Athletic Director for 25 years. There, he also spent some of his time coaching basketball, tennis, and swimming.
Clearly, Paulauskas has quite an expansive background in the athletic field. However, before coming back to Assumption in June, Paulauskas wanted to test out a different field and took a position in the business world for the past four years. Through all these years, he remained an active member in the AC community while he served on the Alumni Board of Directors.
When the Athletic Director's position opened up here at AC, Paulauskas said he was "highly motivated to do good work here" because he simply "loves the place."
He feels it is very important to be highly involved with your alma mater. Paulauskas has a three-to-five year plan for his own alma mater that is constantly changing, but says that we will be seeing the changes in the next few months here on campus.
First off, he wishes for Assumption to be the benchmark athletic institution in the NE-10. This means that Assumption would offer athletic opportunities that would complement the academic experience. Paulauskas also wants each team to be in the top third of their sport.
"I want all the teams to be consistently competitive across the board," said Paulauskas.
According to Paulauskas, there will be no change in the admission program, as he would like the college to continue to offer it's rigorous academic challenges. He would like Assumption to be the school that high school students look at and aim for.
Paulauskas knows that the athletic facilities here are clearly in dire need of renovation, and in order to make Assumption College be the aim for high school athletes, things need to be done.
"Laska is forty years old and needs a face lift on the outside and a complete renovation on the inside," says Paulauskas. "And the outdoor fields are extremely inadequate in size and quality."
