"Touchdown Mary" finally has something to celebrate. After opening the season with a loss, the AC Greyhound Football team has rebounded with two winds. Their first win came against Stonehill College. The Hounds were able to control the game clock, as they had ten more first downs than the Chieftains. Senior Captain quarterback R.J. Coleman completed 7 of 17 passes on the day.
Senior Captain Kyle Yermalovich, a wide receiver for the Hounds, led the team in receiving four catches for 40 yards, while Sophomore tight end Brendan Sweeney added a 32 yard grab. On the ground, Senior Manny Lokko, a running back, had 121 yards rushing. Lokko's rushing yards included and earned him both scores for the Hounds and a spot on the Northeast-10s weekly honor roll.
Sophomore linebacker Chris Grogan had 11 tackles on the day. Junior defensive end Brian Gordon had seven tackles. Along with linebacker Gene Meccariello, from the Class of 2006, having seven tackles as well. Gordon added to his tackles with a sack.
The defense was able to stop the Chieftains eight times inside the five yard line in the final 2:50 of the game. On the final play of the game with Stonehill on Assumption's own three yard line, Grogan was able to deflect a pass to end the game, and secure the Hound's victory. Grogan's play earned him Defensive Player of the Week honors from the Northeast-10.
Against the Saint Anselm Hawks, the Hounds started off quick with Freshman running back Kevin L'Ecuyer returning a kickoff for an 86 yard touchdown. Coleman then followed that up with a 65 yard touchdown run of his own to give the Hounds the 12-7 lead, a lead they would keep for the rest of the game.
Another Hounds' score, this time by Lokko, and an extra point by Junior kicker Sean Landers, gave the Hounds a 12 point lead heading into the half. In the third the Hawk offense scored a touchdown and a field goal brought them within two.
In the fourth, a 56 yard touchdown pass from Coleman to Yermalovich gave the Hounds some breathing room. After allowing another St. Anselm score, the defense was able to stop the Hawks for the final 2:38 of the game, with the Hawk drive concluding with a missed 52 yard field goal to give the Hounds their second straight victory 26-24.
