Many of the student athletes at Assumption are working hard for the good of their teams and the community. I was recently given the chance to interview Pete Gardula and many of the coaches at Assumption. As a senior this year I learned how hard the coaches at Assumption work for their players, to get recruits, while showing a high level of commitment. I have not only seen this from the coaches and players, but from the community at and around Assumption. I consider it a privilege to have been accepted into such a community.

From my interviews with Peter Gardula, the Associate Director of Athletics, and many of the coaches, I sincerely believe that everyone in the Athletic Department is extremely dedicated to ensuring a positive future for the athletes at Assumption College. The school is looking at one of its biggest recruitment years, as it will be the school's centennial anniversary.

In my interview with Gardula, he stated that coaches need to pass an NCAA recruiting exam. His job is to see that coaches pass this test. He assists perspective student athletes if the coaches are not around.

"The school sells itself," said Gardula. "In a three prong fashion, it sells because of the community, the academics and the athletics."

Students come mostly from the New England region, but the school does branch out for increased diversity. Gradula loves working with and for the student athletes, which keeps him with the field of athletes.

Tom Ackerman, the men's head basketball coach, works hard with the help of assistant coaches to get his recruiting done all but two months of the year.

"Persistence is an important quality to have," said Ackerman.

He demonstrates this persistence by sticking with recruits. Ackerman tries to find them when they have just entered their high school careers and sticks with them until college. If they make it here, he will stick with them through their Assumption experience.

Kerry Phayre, the women's head basketball coach, said she dedicates much of her spring, summer, and fall to the recruitment of players. This can mean traveling on ten hour car rides.
