Light the Night, an annual walk to raise money for cancer research, will be held on Sunday, September 26, 2004 at six-thirty p.m. Registration will be held that day at four-thirty with a specific sign-up area for Assumption students who plan on participating in the walk. Students are urged to register whether they've made a donation or not. For information on how to donate, contact Felicia Marks, this year's student coordinator at fmarks@assumption.edu for collection envelopes. There is a $25 donation goal per walker to help the program reach their overall goal of $51,000. The donation money goes to cancer research, patient and community services, and public health and professional education services at a rate of 75 cents per dollar.

This walk was brought to Assumption College in the fall of 2000 by then Senior Kyle Egress. Prior to his involvement, there had been one Light the Night walk. Now, four years later, the Massachusetts section of the Leukemia/Lymphoma Society has nine walk sites in Massachusetts, New Hampshire, and Maine.

Past events have drawn in the mayor of Worcester and other local politicians. This year should yield a turnout including United States Congressman James McGovern and Assumption College president, Dr. Thomas Plough as well as other AC staff members.

"It's an important event for me," said AC alumnus and cancer survivor Justin Smith. "I hope a lot of people participate and donate."

So take the time to help this worthy cause. The walk will leave from Laska Gymnasium and proceed down Salisbury Street to Notre Dame High School where it will turn around and finish with a loop of the Assumption campus. For additional information please e-mail Felicia Marks at Fmarks@assumption.edu. Checks can be made payable to the Leukemia Society. Every dollar helps, so don't be discouraged if you cannot raise the goal of $25.
