Ambrose at Bat...Again

Did you ever get your time to shine?

All college athletes should receive an ample amount of praise when they perform above and beyond. They should all get a chance to have their time in the limelight. It may not be everyday that you score the winning goal, strike out the number one hitter in the league, or spike it for game point. When your glory days are over and you sit back on your couch to reminisce with kids or friends about those times when you were it - when you were number one - you want to have some type of substantial evidence to show, so no one can misconstrue your true athletic ability.

One of the main forums for displaying the skill and perseverance that athletes have is through the newspaper and for this example we will use our own school newspaper, the Provoc. With a paper such as this that is published seven times a semester, fourteen times a year for all you non-math majors, there are plenty of opportunity for athletes to appear in both written word and photographs. If the Provoc was a daily paper, I could understand that there may be a lack of informational statistics or standout athletes. In one 24-hour period it is difficult to break records, win track meets or score a hat trick.

But, this isn't a daily paper. The Provoc comes out approximately twice a month. Within the month of September there were 54 sporting events that Assumption College athletes participated in. This includes football, J.V. football, women's soccer, men's soccer, field hockey, men's golf, cross country, volleyball, men's tennis, baseball, and softball. So, if my math serves correct, that would be 27 sporting events for each issue of the Provoc. However, as each deadline rolls around, it is as if Assumption's only athletes are armchair quarterbacks.

In an effort to enhance the extent and timeliness of information covered in one issue, the entire editorial staff of the Provoc increased the number of issues per semester and changed many of the reoccurring items you will find. Specifically in Sports, new additions include the Hounds Notebook thanks to James Fuccione, Numbers to Know, and M.V.P. of the Week. M.V.P. of the Week is specifically what I would like to address about the Sports section. This is where the praise and the time in the lime-light come into play for all Assumption athletes.
