Anticipation can be a tough thing to deal with. Just try doing it for 86 years like Dr. Peter B. Aucoin. That's how long the 101-year-old Connecticut native has been waiting for the Red Sox to win another World Series. The Boston Globe featured Aucoin, who was 15 years old when he attended Assumption prep back in 1918, in an article back on October 9.
Aucoin also spoke at last year's commencement saying, "If I knew we'd still be waiting for another World Series title 86 years later, maybe I would have savored the championship in 1918." The Globe's Jules Crittenden reported of how Aucoin and his classmates would follow the game by passing around the Boston newspapers. Current Assumption College students obviously have the luxury of cable TV and can catch regular season games on NESN and post-season action on FOX or ESPN.
"I'm forever hopeful," says Aucoin, "but I think this might be the year."
Women's soccer just keeps on rolling. Solid defense, led by seniors Ali Reyell and Kali DeCouto, only allowed five shots as Assumption beat Southern New Hampshire University, 2-0.
"There's eleven people on the field doing their job," says Reyell. "The [defense] is working hard to limit shots."
Junior Erin Faucher scored both goals, one in each half, and now has five goals to go with five assists on the season. Standout freshman goalie Lauren Matysiak only had to save the one shot that was on target. Junior midfielder Lauren Ditolla was awarded player of the game for hustle and doing the hard work that doesn't show up on the stat sheets.
The team is currently 8-3 with all eight wins being shutouts. That sets a record for shutouts by women's soccer at Assumption College.
"It's an honor to put on the captain's band for these girls," add Reyell.
Next game is Saturday at 1 when Pace University comes to town.
Students do not hear a whole lot about the golf team even though they are one of the more successful programs of the fall season. Jeff Furtado was named the NE-10 player of the Year and achieved first team all-conference honors. The team finished seventh out of nineteen teams at the E.C.A.C. Division II championships in Syracuse, New York. Out 97 golfers, Assumptions Chris Cowell finished twelfth (77-75-152), James Newman finished eighteenth (81-73-154), and Furtado placed twenty-ninth (81-75-156). The last meet of the fall will be the New England Invitational on October 18th and 19th.
