Policy enforcement angers AC Student Body:

Res Life must loosen leash

Last week I had the privilege bestowed upon me of writing one of the first senior columns for our class of 2005. I shed some light on the mysterious world of T5, but this week my article will have nothing to do with that. I know I'm sorry; however, you all must be relieved to know that I will at least continue my journalistic excellence throughout the year in the form of this column.

Many of you at least knew about the protest concerning open alcohol containers that occurred during the vice presidential debate, which we had hosted by two radio personalities here on campus. Although the ideas behind the rally were good in cause for the student body, I think the timing and presentation of the ideas at the event could have been better. Before I continue though, I would like it to be known that I am in no way bashing the rally. My friends organized it and put an immense amount of work behind getting their ideas voiced.

Something clearly needs to be done regarding the Residential Life policy enforcement (Remember 'enforcement;' It will be pertinent later on.). These few students took a stand and tried to accomplish something. Most people sit and complain or write articles-wait scratch that second part-and most simply don't try to do anything about it. I thank those who write about their concerns for their efforts; if you see them, shake their hand and thank them too because maybe the protest will raise a bit of awareness about the students being extraordinarily displeased with how the year is starting.

In any case, I am also a part of the Student Government Association here on campus. The issues relative to Res. Life have been a major part of the discussions in our (joyous) time spent together on Sunday evenings. Some of the discussion has been less productive than others, and we have had administrators come in to answer questions to help us better understand what is going on, and run through possible changes.

It was brave of them to come in and confront a large selection of students representing all of you. Yup, you. You might not have even voted, but we are there to take your ideas and do something with them (So you know, talk to us.). They took our questions, accusations, and recommendations; however, there was still a lot left unanswered. Why could a couple of the most important people, relative to these issues, not answer our questions and allegations? Because one of the integral parts to this puzzle that is Reslife was missing.
