A new newspaper has emerged at Assumption College. This paper, entitled The Independent, serves as a venue through which Assumption students can begin thinking about world issues. The first issue of The Independent was concerned with the war in Iraq.

The paper appeared last Monday, October 18th. Students found this blue double-sided sheet spread out on the information booth in Hagan Campus center, tables in Charlie's, in the basement commuter lounge, in dormitory laundry rooms, and other high traffic areas.

The paper's slogan, "independent writing for independent thinkers . . . students and faculty working to inform the AC community" sets the tone for the short articles and information boxes. Instead of reinforcing the idea that disagreeing with the war in Iraq is unpatriotic, the paper urges independent thinking.

"As Americans, we have the right and the obligation to question our government," one article says. "Our politicians are accountable to us the voters, this war is on our shoulders as much as it is our theirs."

The paper also contains questions to think about in terms of world, social, and political issues as well as resources that allow students to learn more information about the war in Iraq.

Little is known about who writes the paper or how it is produced. The editors of the paper wish to remain anonymous and are reticent to speak out.

"In sticking with our intended goals, we would rather not do a formal interview," said an email response from The Independent. "It is good to hear that students did, in fact, read it and are talking about it. We are already busy working on our second edition which should be out shortly."

The Independent comes as the latest in a series of political based clubs and endeavors by the Assumption Community. Earlier this year, English Professors Lucia Knoles and Ann Murphy founded the People for Principled Patriotism and created a stir around campus with their posters reminding students that, "It's your war too." In addition, on Tuesday, October 19th, the Current and Foreign Affairs Club held its first meeting on the 3rd floor of LLC.

Much like The Independent, this new club seeks, as a campus-wide email advertised, "to help Assumption Students learn how to discuss issues of political nature respectfully and openly and in doing so help them to become more informed through using the avenue of discussion."

If you missed the first edition of The Independent, check your dorm rooms for any extra copies (6-men's laundry room still has a few copies). If you have already read the paper, send an email to think_Independent@yahoo.com with your comments, feedback, and questions and be on the lookout for the next issue to make its appearance.
