The gridiron Greyhounds managed to keep pace with Division I-AA opponent Iona College until the half ended last Saturday. Assumption football remains winless, but the team continues to show how close they are to really putting it all together. Getting past the 23-6 score and 40 rushes for 155 yards (about 3.8 per carry) by Iona's Rudy Arcara, you'll see some impressive numbers from Assumption. Junior linebacker Mike Pruell finished the day with 16 tackles, a fumble recovery, and a sack. Chris Grogan, another junior linebacker, had 11 tackles, giving him 236 in his career. Senior nose tackle Matt Curran had two sacks and Brian Gordon, surprise surprise, tallied another sack of his own in the game.

Defense is only half the battle though. AC's quarterbacks threw four interceptions and were sacked seven times, leaving the team with not much offensive action. The two teams were equal in first downs (14) and Assumption beat out Iona, who are struggling themselves this year with a 1-6 record, in net passing yards (AC- 192, IC-101). Football will be home this week, as they get set for Pace University, who was recently shutout by Merrimack 28-0, and like Assumption, has not won yet this year.

AC Golf coach Tim Bibaud has been awarded the 2004 Gordon McCullough Memorial Award. The awardee is presented each year to a coach for outstanding contributions to college golf. The award is chosen from coaches in New England and is named for former Athletic Director and golf coach of the University of Hartford. The golf team finished third in the NE-10 Championships this past weekend and will expect to qualify for the NCAA Championships. Bibaud himself is no stranger to the NCAA tourney. He was captain of the Holy Cross team in his junior and senior years and helped to lead them into the 1981 tournament as a senior.

Women's Cross Country finished fifth in the NE-10 championships, which is just about where they are in the New England Region standings. Out of over 450 runners, AC's Erin O'Connell placed 13th. The team's average time was 19:33.7. The men's squad finished ninth in the championships.
