Each fall, Alpha Zeta Beta, the Assumption College chapter of the International English Honor Society Sigma Tau Delta, inducts a new group of students who have shown outstanding academic achievement in English. On Monday, November 1st, Sigma Tau Delta inducted 33 new members during a 75-minute ceremony in the Hagan Campus Center.

"They're some of our hardest working students," said English Professor Dr. Rachel Ramsey of the new inductees and current members of Sigma Tau Delta. "They've pursued all of the opportunities available to them here."

The ceremony began with the induction of new members by the Sigma Tau Delta officers. While the majority of inductees were juniors, a number of seniors and sophomores were also included in the induction. As Senior Secretary Cari Roger introduced the chapter's newest members, Seniors President Melissa Rijo and Vice President Ivy Stabell presented the inductees with certificates and pins.

"It was a big honor," said Senior inductee Letitia Baker. "I've never been asked to be in an honor society before and it was nice to feel recognized for all those hours I've spent reading and writing papers."

In planning the Sigma Tau Delta induction ceremony, it was particularly important to Dr. Dana Aspinall, advisor to Sigma Tau Delta, that the senior members of the society each be recognized individually.

"I particularly like the English majors," said Aspinall. "I get close to the students I have and I want them to know that we appreciate and acknowledge what they do."

Aspinall arranged for each senior to provide a list of his or her accolades and accomplishments from throughout their time at Assumption. The students were then asked to stand as their names and accomplishments were read to the audience. There was mention of various achievements including making the Dean's List, volunteering in the community, and participation in a number of other campus activities.

"It was great how they acknowledged each senior," said Senior Sigma Tau Delta member Lauren Hannon. "It was interesting to hear what everyone has done at Assumption."
