It was great timing on Junior Lauren Ditolla's part. Her first goal of the season also happened to be the only goal scored in Assumption's Women's Soccer's 1-0 win over Southern Connecticut on Wednesday. Junior Andrea Marcoccio and Freshman Kim Sullivan both assisted. The goal came at 37:50 in the first half, which the Greyhounds controlled. The second half saw good action on both sides and a scary moment when Southern Connecticut's Beth Gandley was awarded a penalty kick with less than eight minutes left in the game. The sophomore midfielder took a shot that would've given Roberto Baggio flashbacks. Not only did Gandley hit the right post, but the Owls also failed to capitalize on the rebound that came right back out. AC's stifling defense cleared the ball and the threat of going into OT.

"When [Gandley] missed it, that was the biggest break," said Senior Captain Ali Reyell. "I thought it was about time luck was on our side."

Luck is not a bad thing to have to complement a team that's clicking like Women's Soccer this season.

"It's the little bit of luck you need to get to a championship," said Marcoccio. The junior co-captain also helped AC to avert some serious irony. Marcoccio deposited a penalty kick at the 38th minute of the first half to push the Hounds past Pace and get to the semi-final game. Now, 14-4 Assumption will travel over the northern border to Rindge, New Hampshire for the NE-10 Championship against Franklin Pierce on Sunday. The game starts at 1:00 p.m.

Head Football Coach Cory Bailey captured his first win as the team shutout Pace 6-0. It is the first shutout since 2000 when the Hounds goose egged Mount Ida 39-0. Freshman QB Ben Roberts threw 13 completions in 26 attempts for 100 yards in his first career start. Roberts had three interceptions, but Pace couldn't take advantage of any of them.

Pace University could not keep pace, especially the way Assumption's defense was playing. They had only 90 yards of total offense in the game, they had just two drives over 20 yards, and they punted nine times. Junior linebacker Mike Pruell had 16 tackles for the second straight game. Senior tackle Brian Gordon and junior linebacker Chris Grogan came to play as always. Gordan tallied three tackles for a loss and Grogan had 10 tackles. Freshman cornerback Brad Arsenault had the Hound's only interception of the game.

Gordon only needs one sack to surpass Brett Svendsen ('03) for the Assumption record. Gordon has 26 sacks and Svendsen had 26.5. Also, if Gordon can get four more tackles for a loss, he will take that record as well.

On offense, Junior Mike Moonan ran for 53 yards and caught the touchdown pass from Roberts. The only points of the game occurred with less than a minute left in the first half. AC had almost ten more minutes of possession time and two more first downs than Pace who is now 0-9 on their season. The football team will be at Brookville, New York to play C.W. Post for their final game of the season this Saturday.
