The Assumption College Chapel Choir will ring in the Christmas season with the annual Advent Service of Lessons and Carols on Thursday, December 2nd at 7:30 p.m. in the Chapel of the Holy Spirit.

Sophomore Shannon Sullivan participated in last year's event.

"I thought it was really peaceful. When everyone was singing, I got goose bumps," said Sullivan. "It's like I actually felt God at one point. It really got me in to the Christmas spirit and made me realize what I am lucky to have."

The Chapel Choir, under the direction of Jane Shivick, has grown in the past five years to 60 members. It sings at the 7:00 p.m. mass every Sunday and provides music for all other liturgical services at the college, such as masses on Family Weekend, Open House, and the Baccalaureate Mass before commencement. It recently sang for the Founder's Day celebration mass and performed for the President's Council dinner at Mechanics Hall on October 15th.

In December, the Chapel Choir has been invited for a second time to provide backup for famed country singer Kenny Rogers at two concerts on his Christmas tour: Kenny Rogers and Friends Celebrate the Season, December 15th at 7:30 p.m. at the Providence Performing Arts Center in Providence, RI and December 17th at 7:30 p.m. at the Verizon Wireless Arena in Manchester, NH. Tickets are available at the box offices or at Ticketmaster locations.

In harmony with the three-year ABC cycle of readings for the liturgical year, the Chapel Choir recently adopted a three-year program cycle for the Spring semester during which it will do the following: 1) produce the musical Godspell (Spring '04); 2) undertake a Choir Mission Trip in order to carry it's music and message to others (Spring '05); and 3) present a concert for Holy Week featuring selections from all three sections of Handel's Messiah (Spring '06). This coming May, from the 16th to the 22nd, the Choir will travel to New York and Philadelphia where it will sing at inner city schools in the Bronx, St. Francis de Sales Church in Philadelphia, and St. Stanislaus Church in Lansdale, PA.

The Chapel Choir rehearses every Thursday night at 7:00 p.m. in the Chapel. The atmosphere is casual and members meet students from all class years. All voices are welcome and no audition is necessary. To join, just come to any rehearsal.
