There are a lot of new faces playing in Laska Gymnasium this season. With last year's graduates like Katelyn Dwyer, Roy Goffer, Shahar Golan, James Lambert, Margaret Liljedahl, "O" McGee-Sharp, and Michelle Towne gone, these young teams will depend a lot on the play of the underclassmen, and the leadership of the upperclassman for their success.
The Lady Hounds got off to a quick start this year, winning their first three games against New Jersey Tech, Caldwell, and Bloomfield.
"Our major goal for the season is to make it to the NCAA's," said Captain Laura "Freddie" Grant. "Another goal is to have at least 20 wins."
The team then faced Merrimack, who was ranked fifth in the country. The Hounds led at halftime 19-12, but the Warriors battled back in the second half and took the game 53-45.
Against Merrimack, Junior Kerry Milhaven led the Hounds in scoring with 14, while Sophomore Suzanne Jackson had 10 points off the bench. Freshman Charde Floyd had 13 rebounds. For Merrimack, Joelle Martin led all scorers with 20 points.
The team faced Pace next, and the Pace Setters proved to be too much for the Hound teams. Pace's Jauna Andrews and Stephanie Ross combined for 23 rebounds as the Setters defeated the Lady Hounds 71-44.
"In order for us to achieve these goals, we need to score more points collectively as a team, and our offense needs to have more of a flow," said Grant. "As a team our defense has been very good. We have held teams to under 60 points."
The young Assumption Men's basketball team has struggled to start the season,
going winless in their first five; all five loses have been by less than 10 points.
The most recent, against the Pace Setters, ended with a score of 82-74, despite 23 points and 20 rebounds by Senior Brian Robinson, and nine points from Postgraduate Captain Elijah Bland. The Hound's defense was unable to stop Pace's Ryan Williams, who had 23 points to lead Pace to its first conference win.
