In sports, leadership is many times considered one of the most important characteristics of any team. The Assumption College ice hockey team does not lack in that area with Senior Captain Scott Hersom. For Hersom, the pressure of being a captain and senior leadership came with no worries.

"I knew what I had to do," Hersom said. "On the ice I felt I should lead by example and show what needs to be done."

The Assumption Ice Dogs have gotten off to a 4-4-1 start, which is a game better than their 3-5-1 start last year. The Ice Dogs fell to 5-8-1 last year, but this year's team seems to be more together and possesses the leadership to prevent that from happening again.

This togetherness and leadership is something the team needs to possess to have a successful season. With eight freshmen on the team, Hersom has shown his value as captain.

"Scott really did an excellent job getting the guys together, especially the freshmen," said Head Coach Keith Hughes. "Not just on the ice, but with our strength and conditioning as well."

Hughes believes that Hersom has had a positive influence on the younger players on the team. As far as being an example for the younger players on the team, Hersom believes it's what he does on the ice that matters.

"I just try to show effort-wise what needs to be done," Hersom said. "I'm not afraid to try to stress certain things to the freshmen on the ice as well, though."

Hersom leads the team in points with 13 (seven goals and six assists). This is a big difference statistically from Hersom's junior year, which was hindered by injuries and a lack of consistent line-mates resulting in a season ending point total of 11.

"Last year was a frustrating year for Scott because he did have a couple of different injuries that ached him," Hughes said. "I think part of it was also my fault as well because we bounced him around a lot and he didn't play consistently with the same people."

As captain Hersom has come back strong and, most importantly, healthy. Already surpassing his point total of last year, Hersom admits that his health is a big factor.
