As classes end and finals begin, it's a time to look back on what we have accomplished in the past year. With the end of the fall semester comes the end of a great year in sports. There will never be another like 2004. I hope that in some respects the future year mimics what we as a nation and a community have experienced, but at the same time I hope the sporting world never experiences some of what this year has brought.

I thought I would start with the highest point of 2004 - the Red Sox winning the World Series. It was the craziest series ever - classes were canceled, tests were moved, parties were thrown on President Plough's front lawn. The Sox did something that no other team in any sport have ever accomplished by coming back from a series that seemed more than out of reach. All you had to do was "keep the faith" and "believe."

Although the Sox victory was a high point for 2004, it also brought along a low point - the death of Victoria Snelgrove. The death of Snelgrove shows the Red Sox Nation that it isn't always just fun and games, but that tragedy can also strike. The Sox took the time to hold a moment of silence before their next game and play it in the memory of Snelgrove - she must have been pulling for her home team up there.

Long before the Sox won the World Series, the Patriots won the Super Bowl. Another amazing team-coached by Belichick and anchored by Brady-won through snow and sleet, giving the opportunity for another parade through the city of Boston. The banner was revealed at Gillette during a fantastic pre-game show to open up a season of record breaking football for the Pats in 2004. New England managed to break the record for longest number of games won consecutively - although they only held the title for a week before losing a game.

The year 2004 was also home to the Summer Olympics. During these games, the USA really made a name for themselves, especially in the pool. Michael Phelps claimed seven gold medals in combined individual and team events. But there is also a downfall to the Olympic swimming team. Very recently, a medal won by a swimmer from the USA was taken away and given to another country when it was found that the swimmer for the US had failed a drug test.
