Besides the addition of a few new awards and setting school records, Senior Brian Gordon may be adding a new helmet and jersey to the mix.
"It's just a matter of getting him in front of the right people," says head football coach Cory Bailey. "He is a tremendous athlete and that's what [teams] are interested in."
The Defensive End, who broke the Assumption career sack record in the last game against C.W. Post, has more than made a name for himself. Gordon earned first team honors by the New England Football Writers Division II-III All-Star, the NE-10 conference All-Stars, and the Worcester Area Football Association All-Stars. He was also named co-defensive player of the year in Worcester, which he attained last season as well. Now, professional level teams, most notably the NFL and Arena League, have shown interest. A few teams have requested film, and Arena League organizations have contacted Coach Bailey and Gordon via email.
"It's definitely something I want to do," said Gordon, who feels that if he gets the opportunity to play professionally, teams will not be disappointed. "This is something that I'm going to work for and put all my attention towards."
Even with the absence of Gordon, Paul Randazzo, and the senior corps, next years program looks promising.
"Our record [this season] wasn't indicative of the team," says Bailey. "We only had eight seniors this year. Next year we'll have fifteen."
That fifteen will include Juniors Dan Sawicki, Mike Pruell, Chris Grogan (who led the team with 98 tackles this past season), and Geno Meccariello who all made honorable mention for the Northeast-10 conference. Also, with the new synthetic fields and lighting, there will be Friday night games added to the schedule. Coach Bailey also hopes to add another strong Division II or Division I-AA opponent.
