RA's termination leaves students with doubts

Before any of us became students here at Assumption, the idea of 'community' was drilled into our heads. We have been told since the beginning of the application process that Assumption College is a tight-knit community of students, professors, and administration. That is why I feel that when the College fails us in promoting this promised sense of community it is important that the student body be made fully aware of the shortcomings.

That being said, I would like to direct your attention to the office of Residential Life, whose job on this campus is to maintain the welfare of the student body living here at Assumption. I feel that the recent actions of Res. Life have brought into question their true integrity in carrying out these intentions.

Sophomores Shayna Reed and Evan Hutson were residential assistants in the Alumni and Desautels buildings this year but were recently fired from their positions. Shayna and Evan were among the most popular RAs in the two buildings. When I asked several residents in Alumni and Des why they liked Shayna and Evan so much, there was a general consensus that Shayna and Evan were respected and viewed as fair. Many of the residents were also in agreement that the other residential assistants in the two buildings were "out to get them in trouble," rather than ensure their safety and wellbeing. "A lot of the girls in my building would come to me with issues they wanted to talk about rather than their own female RA because they felt more comfortable with me," said Evan. If the residents were so comfortable with Shayna and Evan, then why were they fired and what kind of staff is Res. Life appointing to our buildings?

The reason that Shayna and Evan were terminated was because an anonymous individual sent photos from Shayna's online photo album to Conway Campbell, the Director of Residential Life. Apparently there were pictures of both Evan and Shayna in the presence of alcohol. However, the residents were not aware of these pictures and Shayna did not provide anyone with a link to them. Evan was already on probation for a different violation, but Shayna had not previously violated any rules stated in the RA contract. However, both were fired for the pictures.
