Reach Out Center

Issue date: 2/5/05 Section: Campus Life
Sometimes it is easy to forget about the Worcester community that exists beyond the duck pond at the front of campus. We get so wrapped up in our own busy world of Assumption College that we forget to take the time to remember those who may not be as lucky as we are. The Reach Out Center gives students the opportunity to become involved in something bigger than the typical everyday college life. It gives us the opportunity to become involved in a community where there is a great need for people who are willing to make a difference.
It's a new year and a new semester. When will there ever be a better time to get involved? Challenge yourself to make a difference in the lives of others. Over twenty programs are getting started up for the spring semester, and we are always looking for more people to lend a helping hand, a kind smile, or a listening ear. There really is something to accommodate everyone's interests. You can tutor children at St. Peter's, play dodgeball at the Boys and Girls Club, feed the hungry at the Veterans Shelter, care for animals at the Baypath Humane Society, or enjoy the conversation and company of an older, wiser person at the Lutheran Home.
With choices like these, plus many more, how can you go wrong? To find out more about the programs available at the ROC, stop by to chat with a Service Director or to pick up some flyers anytime. I can promise that you'll be glad you did.
Maybe there are some of you out there who think that they can't fit volunteering into an already jam-packed schedule of classes, meetings, and endless homework. Well, we have something for you too! Our "one shot" projects give you the opportunity to become involved for a one-time event instead of an on-going program. It is less of a commitment but you still get to experience the joy of serving others. There are various opportunities available throughout the semester.
As Valentine's Day approaches, it is important that we all take the time to remember those who may be lonely and without loved ones at this time of year. Two of our upcoming one-shots are geared towards doing just that! On February 8th take a minute between classes from 11:00 a.m. to 12:00 p.m. to stop by the info booth in Hagan to create a Valentine for a veteran. We will have all the supplies right there for you and you can use your creative skills to make a card that will surely touch the heart of one of Worcester's veterans.
