Thoughts from the Corner Office: SGA Column

Welcome back from winter break. I hope that everyone enjoyed the holidays and had a nice relaxing break.

The Student Government Association moved back to campus a few days early for our annual winter retreat. It is always hard getting motivated for second semester (especially since most of us spent plenty of time sleeping, watching television and doing much of nothing over break), so this retreat is always a great opportunity for us to jump into the semester and discuss our goals and plans for the rest of the year.

After a day of training on campus, and plenty of food from Nancy Cheng's, we headed to the Berkshires and spent the following day and night at Camp Winadoo. At this retreat each class presented an hour long presentation to the rest of the senate on a topic of their choosing. These topics ranged from diversity to group dynamics. Each presentation was unique and added a different dimension to our training. A lot of work went into planning each presentation, and it was very impressive to see how well each one went and how helpful they each were to the entire group.

SGA also took part in the student leader training day which took place this past Saturday. It was a wonderful opportunity for us to interact with the other student leaders on campus. After some fun and exciting ice breakers, we were able to sit in small groups and talk about ways we can strengthen the network between each of our groups on campus. It was a successful day and we all walked away with many great ideas on how to be more successful in our organizations.

With the start of the new semester, SGA is welcoming some new faces and seeing some changes in positions. In the Sophomore Class, Laurie Cadigan will serve as Senator. Frank Galligan will be moving up to the position of President and Adam Reiss to Vice-President. Also, joining SGA is Junior Jeff Furtado who be serving as a Senator.

Each year, there are many of us within SGA who feel discouraged that we are not seeing things changed right away and feel that we are not being heard. At our winter retreat we were reminded that things take time and we should not expect to see things change immediately after a proposal is passed in the senate. Just recently, we heard some encouraging news about proposals that have been put through by SGA. Last year a proposal was passed to add a photography course. After much discussion on this issue, and realizing cost and facilities were a concern, a photography course has been approved for the Fall 2005 semester and will be offered at an off campus location.
