With a recent announcement that this season will be the last for the team currently known as the Worcester Icecats to play here in Worcester, the city seemed to have lost its only pro-team. With only a few months left in the hockey season it is almost time for the Ice Cats to unlace their skates for the last time at the DCU Center. But there is more sports news to be heard and a new team that will be calling Worcester its home this spring.
With all this snow outside, it is hard to even think of the spring months, let alone think of green grass and the fresh dirt of a baseball field. Well, for those Worcester natives or those who attend school in Worcester, it is time to stop thinking about skiing, snowboarding, and hockey and start thinking about pro-baseball being played in the hills of Worcester.
Worcester Professional Baseball LLC is a team in the Canadian American Association of Professional Baseball League. Their first season will commence in May of 2005 and shortly after the class of 2005, says goodbye to Worcester the first pitch on will be thrown May 26th - opening day.
And not just any hill will be the site of Worcester's pro-baseball team, but a hill that many college students of Worcester have been to or at least seen over the years - that is Fitton Field at the College of the Holy Cross. After negotiations with several of the city's colleges including Clark University, WPI, and our own Assumption College, along with looking at prospective baseball fields that exist in other parts of the city, Can-Am and the Worcester pro-baseball team settled upon Fitton Field and its capacity of 1,000 fans to call home.
It has been over 70 years since Worcester has been the host city for a professional baseball team. So the Can-Am League thinks that Worcester is a thirsty city waiting to be watered with some action close to home.
The 92 game schedule will include 46 home games at ticket prices as low as $6 for an adult and $5 for children for individual seats at individual games. The option for VIP seating will also be available, with added perks and bonuses to be announced later.
