There are many opportunities at the Reach Out Center where students have a chance to give back to the community. Whether they take time to make cards to brighten up someone's day or donate their change to help some who are less fortunate during the holidays every little act of kindness is appreciated. The reward for giving is the giving in itself but sometimes 'thank you's' can mean the world.
Recently, the Reach Out Center received a thank you card for the money we collected for the School House Project. The money was sent to Mwandu Primary School and used for books for the students and the teachers. Within the letter, pictures of the children and teachers were enclosed and you know what they say: a picture is worth a thousand words, and in this case much more than words. The pictures showed the books piled up on the desk and the glowing smiles on the students faces as they received them. The pictures are indescribable.
I would encourage all to come in the Reach Out Center and take a look at the bulletin board. The warmth and happiness that I felt as I looked at these children with their illuminated faces was unlike anything I have experienced. It goes to show that whether you know it or not, you can make the difference in the lives of others and these pictures exemplify that idea.
At the Reach Out Center we do not always get to see in person the kind of changes in people's lives that we make. The cards and letters that we receive give us that little bit of hope and reassure us that we are making a difference.
Annually, we collect money for homeless shelters scattered throughout Worcester. Pennies For The Homeless was a great success and this year. We donated over $700 to the PIP Shelter, which has been running for 25 years. Its focus is making a difference in the lives of People in Peril. This shelter offers tools and opportunities for people who are homeless to turn their lives around. It offers hope and support for those who have started on a path to recovery.
