As alarms clocks across Massachusetts go off every morning, countless people drag themselves out of bed to go work at unsatisfying jobs. Students empathize by getting out of bed to go to that unsatisfying class. But what if we all got up every day excited to go to work because you could say, "I love my job," and mean it?
Our own Dean of Campus Life, Nancy Crimmin, is able to mean it.
"Assumption is an awesome place to work," said Crimmin with a sparkle in her eye. "I've never dreaded coming to work. I don't mean that everything's perfect, but that I love what I do. My position is new and so open-ended that I can say, 'I heard about something and I'd like to try this here.' I get to take on new, fun projects and see how they can work for our students."
Part of the defined job for Dean Crimmin includes supervising Residential Life, Student Activities, and Recreational Sports, as well as numerous other projects including strengthening the student leadership development program and advising the Student Leader Council.
With plenty of Assumption experience and a tremendous talent for higher education, Crimmin took her current position in June of 2003. Prior to this she worked in Residential Life for 10 years. Starting in 1992 as the Resident Director of Salisbury, Nancy quickly moved up to Assistant Director of Res Life.
"When I first started, each building handled our own judicial conflicts," Crimmin recalled. "But it was as RD that I grew to love the residential experience-transforming the learning outside the classroom."
For a new R.D., the winter of '92/'93 was truly a learning experience. A 24-hour snowstorm caused a massive power failure and water resource crisis, limiting activity in the residence halls, and causing all residents to eat dinner at Taylor early in the afternoon before it got to dark to see the food and find their way back to their halls. The dorms had a back up battery system but this power also ran out.
