It's a shame it had to end like this, but Tom Ackerman should be remembered for his success and the tradition that he upheld.
"I'm very proud of the program we've had," says Ackerman, "even though we lose we have some very good young players in the program."
At the end of this 2004-2005 Men's Basketball season, Ackerman will no longer be the head coach of the Greyhounds. Out of his 27 years coaching, six have been spent here at Assumption. Prior to this season, Ackerman posted a 78-64 record, including a first place finish in the NE-10 in 2001-2002. That team made it all the way to the NCAA Regional Finals.
Ackerman looks to get an athletic administration position at the high school level, saying that he has enjoyed coaching, but is ready to move in a different direction. He was nice enough to talk for the short time he had before running out to see his seventh-grade son compete in the sport he loves.
"I've been watching other people's kids play for 27 years," says Ackerman smiling, "now I can see my own."
Assumption is already in the hunt for a new coach. Ackerman is optimistic that the AC Basketball tradition can continue after his departure.
"With the right recruiting, this team can get very good in a very short time," said Ackerman.
Even though this is an uncharacteristic season for Assumption where they are sharing last place with Southern Connecticut, the Laska Gymnasium still was among the best for attendance in the NE-10.

Make it 77 straight wins for Men's Tennis. With the addition of a freshman named Antonio Ricalde from Ciudad del Este, Paraguay, who could compete for the number one slot on the team, the Tennis Team rolled over UNH.
Assumption swept singles and doubles competition versus the University of New Hampshire who came to the Shrewsbury Racquet Club only to walk away with a 9-0 loss. Sophomore Matt Stopp, Senior James Newman, Junior Michael Goldman, and Sophomore Dave Marshall all improved to 15-1, 39-8, 25-1, and 15-2, respectively. Ricalde and fellow Freshman Rick Lieberman both tallied their first victories.
Next Saturday, Men's Tennis will face a Dowling team (Long Island, NY) who are among the best in the Northeast.

Playing in a very tough conference, Men's Ice Hockey is 9-9-2 overall and 2-3-0 in the NE-10. Senior Captain Scott Hersom is among the top players in the conference in scoring and assists (10 goals, 14 assists - 24 points) along with Seniors Jeff Ilvonen (9,12-21) and Geno De Angelis (10, 5-15). Two of De Angelis' goals are game winners. Junior Goalie Sean O' Leary is third in the conference allowing 29 goals in over 428 minutes.
Assumption has a tough home stretch coming up when they'll play Southern New Hampshire and Curry College. Three of the last five games will be in Worcester, either at Buffone Rink or the Hart Center when AC visits Worcester State.
