What is a volunteer? Some might think of people who give their time back to the community in after-school programs or nursing homes. Others may picture people on a long walk or bike ride to raise money for a worthy cause. Maybe some people conjure up images of Peace Corps volunteers or those who rushed to the aid of the tsunami victims. There are millions of ways to be a volunteer, and they do not all have to be as formal as the ideas listed above.

Webster's Dictionary says that a volunteer is "a person who voluntarily undertakes or expresses a willingness to undertake a service." A service can be anything from offering a smile to someone who looks lonely or listening to a friend who has a problem. It is important to remember that the simple, ordinary things we do for each other on a daily basis are acts of volunteerism.

If you're not ready to make a formal commitment to volunteering then try to commit to one act of service for someone a day. Say hi to that person you walk by on the way to class each day. Go out of your way to thank the employees at Taylor and Charlie's who serve your food. Leave a note in a friend's mailbox just to say hi. Hold the door open for the person behind you. Give up your Dunkin' Donuts coffee to the homeless veteran on the street corner who looks like he needs it more than you do. Smile at people.

These simple acts of volunteering will leave you feeling great and will surely brighten the day of someone else. Performing small random acts of kindness will make you and those around you happier!

The Reach Out Center has another great opportunity available for you to brighten the day of someone else. From March 15th-18th we will be collecting phone cards, CDs, DVDs, and video games to be sent to wounded soldiers at the Walter Reed Memorial Center. Please take the chance to make a difference and donate one of these items.

For those of you out there who feel like you may be ready to make a stronger commitment to volunteering stop into the Reach Out Center to find out about all of the opportunities that are available. There are several on-going programs that are always looking for more volunteers. Why not spend one afternoon a week at an after-school program like Campfire or Girls Inc.? Perhaps you would prefer to enjoy the company of the older and wiser at the Lutheran Home? Or maybe you would like the chance to develop a one-on-one relationship with a person who has intellectual disabilities through the Best Buddies program? All of these opportunities and so many more are available simply by stopping into the Reach Out Center!

Don't forget to come by the office and check out the bulletin board featuring our Heroes of the Week! If you know anyone who deserves to be considered for this honor stop in and fill out a nomination form.

As spring approaches make a commitment to helping others. Come by the Reach Out Center anytime and learn how you can get involved!
