Celebrity status is all about helping others

Kristen Caretta

Issue date: 3/1/05 Section: Feature
What does it take to become a celebrity? I mean, what is required to make your name one commonly used in a household, your face recognizable by everyone? Such a position seems so out of reach for any one of us, but someone has got to do it. Someone has got to be the one to take the chance and hit it big.

Let's just say I chose to take that plunge, and actually became a celebrity.

It would require a lot of work on my behalf, such as a level of talent in something and (to put it bluntly) an attractive exterior, but it would have a huge pay-off, right? Who knows? With fame comes a plethora of life-altering changes, changes that can sometimes be too much to handle. On the upside, however, there is an array of privileges and rights that most celebrities take full advantage of. If I really succeeded in becoming a celebrity, I don't even know where I would begin!

Let's face it; being famous gives you more opportunities. You have the money and the star-status to make a difference. If suddenly I was Kristen Caretta, world famous actress (I know, it's a major stretch), then I would get involved in the world around me. I find that so many celebrities are caught up in their own lives and never look at the bigger picture. It takes a certain amount of drive and interest to want to make a difference in the world.

The fact is, we only truly want to change what affects us in some way. People want to attend charity benefits, start funds, and make a statement because, for the most part, it makes them feel good. There is nothing wrong with that mentality because chances are if it's making one person feel good then it's making others feel good too. No one would do anything if there weren't some sort of beneficial outcome for him or her. Whether it be recognition, praise, or just the simple feeling of accomplishment and pride in a job well done, people strive to do things that make them feel good.

With that being said, my first order of business as a celebrity would be to help out our country. So much money from our government goes into helping and aiding other countries so that we can maintain our status as the "police-force" of the world. What about the homeless people in the United States? Take a drive down Park Ave. on a Sunday morning and count the number of people holding up cardboard signs on the side of the road. That's only Worcester-imagine in other cities, in other states. I would have to be naive to think that I could help all these people on my own, but I would be willing to try, especially with the means to do so.
