Sitting at 7:00 p.m. mass on Sunday is probably one of the most relaxing times of the week. True, Assumption does have a gorgeous chapel. And yes, there are awesome student-run masses. But what makes mass here at Assumption College truly unique is the amazing vocal styling of the Assumption College Chapel Choir.
The Chapel Choir is currently comprised of 65 students, who all fall within a wide range of musical talent. And if you have ever seen them perform, you must have also noticed their wonderfully talented conductor, Jane Shivick. And who could forget about the wonderful pianist accompanying the choir, Dr. Frank Corbin, Director of Chapel Music and nationally renowned organist. Together these two have worked to help mold Chapel Choir into what it has become today.
Shivick, Director of Chapel Choir and National Winner of the Metropolitan Opera Auditions, was actually once a student at Assumption and a member of the Chapel Choir herself.
"When I was a student here in the late 80's, the Chapel Choir consisted of approximately 10 students who most likely sang in their home parishes and offered their voices at the 7:00 p.m. mass. I was one of those students," said Shivick. "I am very thrilled to see what the Chapel Choir has metamorphasized into, especially having been a part of it from the beginning."
The choir here is definitely a sought after group, performing each week at the 7:00 p.m. mass, rain or shine. That is not all though. This year alone they have already performed at the Mass of the Holy Spirit in September, the Advent Service of Lessons and Carols, the President's Council Dinner in October, and even sang with world-renowned singer, Kenny Rogers on his national Christmas Tour.
As if that is not enough, each year the Choir each year rotates to perform a new piece in the spring. In March of 2004, they performed in a fully-staged production of Steven Schwartz's smash-hit musical "Godspell." This upcoming May they will be traveling and participating in a Mission Tour within the United States, visiting such places as New York City and Lansdale, PA.
