Litchfield makes each day count

No one knows eye-opening experiences better than Shahrayne Litchfield.

While working in Boston at the City Roots Alternative High School in 1988, a student attempted to throw a chair at Litchfield, who was pregnant at the time. She was able to talk the student out of it, but then Litchfield had a very difficult decision to make. The student was already on probation.

"I knew that if I threw him out, that was it," said Litchfield.

Litchfield ended up taking a couple of days to think about and eventually let him come back to school. However, the student had to apologize to Litchfield as well as the other students in the class. The decision Litchfield had to make "weighed heavily on my mind," she says.

Litchfield said the student, "had intelligence and had wasted it thus far."

The student ended up graduating from City Roots Alternative High School, and went on to graduate from Bunker Hill Community College. Litchfield was asked by the student to come with him for his interview at Suffolk University, where he later attended and graduated with his Bachelor's Degree. Litchfield last heard that he was trying to get on the Boston Police Department.

Litchfield is currently using her teaching skills as CSL Director at AC. Shahrayne Litchfield is the Community Service Learning Director here at Assumption. She works with faculty, students, and community agencies to set up experiential learning outside of the classroom, to enhance and reinforce what is learned in the class. Litchfield goes to classes and meets with students and agencies in order to find matches for Assumption students.

The number of Community Service Learning students vary based upon the number of courses offered each semester. Last semester, there were 149 students enrolled in Community Service Learning courses.

"I think everyone needs to reflect on when they were younger and who were the people in their eyes that made the most impact," explains Litchfield of why people should become involved in community service learning and volunteer work.
