February 22 is National Recreational Sports and Fitness Day and the Student Recreation Council, PAWS, Campus Recreation and the Health Center are teaming up for the third annual Assumption College Health, Wellness and Fitness Day. This year the group will be hosting a Health Fair on February 22, from 3-6 p.m. in the Plourde Recreation Center. Like last year there will be free massages for the Assumption College Community. Added this year will be health screenings, fitness tests, BMI analysis and other health and wellness related information. The goal of this event is to educate students about the different ways to live a healthier lifestyle. The health fair will also be the kick off and sign-up deadline for Assumption College's Biggest Loser program. This is a six-week long program that will motivate students to try new activities and foster a healthier lifestyle for participants. Each week there will be a list of activities to choose from that includes educational seminars, work out requirements, dietary choices and much more. The overall goal is to get participants to exercise and to lead a healthier lifestyle, however there will be one overall winner of the Biggest Loser. Weigh-ins and BMI assessment will occur at the beginning of the program, after week three and at the end of the program. The person with the largest percentage of weight lost will be crowned Assumption's Biggest Loser. The program will be $10 per participant. BELLY DANCING ADDED TO CAMPUS RECREATION INSTRUCTIONAL PROGRAMS

The instructional classes are beginning again and this semester there is an exciting new class that has caught the eyes of many people: Belly Dancing. Belly Dancing offers an alternative method to working out. In this instructional program you are learning a new style of dance while working out the stomach muscles that are harder to tone up. Campus Recreation is working hard to be more diverse and meeting the unique needs of the Assumption College Community. The new class is on Thursdays at 7 p.m. Other classes being offered this semester are Step & Strength, Spinning, Yoga, Lifeguard Certification and Water Safety Instructor. OFFICIALS TRAINING

This year Campus Recreation has increased its officials training program for all sports. If you played intramural flag football the last two years you may have already noticed the difference. Participants in intramural flag football commented last semester that the officiating had seen a significant improvement from the previous year. Campus Recreation has made a concerted effort to increase the officials' rule knowledge, mechanics and positioning. Officials are put through classroom training where they learn rules, hand signals, communication, conflict management, case scenarios and positioning. After that they have a few hours of on the court training to put the class room work into action. Emphasis is put on positioning to understand the mechanics. This is followed by scrimmages for officials to practice what they learned and to get feedback from the Campus Recreation staff on what they need to improve. The training doesn't stop there. Campus Recreation evaluates its officials during every game and provides them with constructive criticism at half-time and after games. This helps each official continue to improve and provide a better playing experience for those participating in intramurals. So next time your official does a good job, let them know.

UPCOMING INTRAMURALS

New intramural leagues for Ice Hockey and Basketball have begun again. Campus Recreation reported that there is a record number of basketball teams this year with 42 total teams. The games started on Monday, January 25. Intramural basketball games run Monday through Thursday 6 p.m. to 10 p.m. and Sundays 4 p.m. to 10 p.m.
