Being that this is my second to last column as SGA President I intend to recognize some of the accomplishments of this 2008-2009 academic year and save for the last column a heaping helping of advice and ever-astute words from yours truly. Though, a forewarning, I would do no such thing as to claim that those words might possess inert worth, but I will certainly do what I can. I suppose as the year runs to an end sentimentality has begun to seep in, masked by preemptive nostalgia for these last few months at Assumption. Realizing and acknowledging finally that yes, I really will be leaving Assumption in forty-some odd days; the nostalgia is fueled by what I consider to be an exemplary year for the student body. I feel a bit like (forgive the banality) a proud parent watching their child (Assumption College) move on to the bigger and better things that the world may offer, sitting, left behind, proud and aware of the impending future successes. Achieve, you all will, for your 'proud parent' has no doubts based on the efforts of this year. I would first like to congratulate the staff of the Provocatuer on a year well done. The quality of journalistic integrity is wholly apparent in articles from front to back covering and tackling various campus issues with impressive objectivity. Joe Mascia, Editor in Chief, along with the other Provoc editors clearly produced excellence in each biweekly edition. The ability to convey humor (evident in the Prohoaxatuer and Mike Andrews' column) did not go unnoticed and is greatly appreciated as well.
AC Allies has done an impressive job bouncing back from some rough waters provoked by last year's storm. Despite past ambiguities, the group has proven again and again that they can and will make a difference on this campus by facilitating some impressive events. I am confident that a base has been built for this emerging group and I look forward to their future successes.
Continuing to promote conversation regarding racial issues ALANA has encountered success in promoting their mission. The Spare Change retreat commenced a new form of racial healing and dialogue with the potential to impress change on Assumption's students.
Up 'till Dawn raising over $25,000 is yet another incredibly extraordinary group advocating and tirelessly working for an indisputably good cause. Spearheaded the second year in a row by senior Anna Maffeo, this group was creative and diligent in their fundraising efforts.
ADAPT is yet another emerging group that has served to make an impression on Assumption's campus, spreading awareness and advocating for a group that often hesitates to speak up. The panel discussion was informative and thought-provoking; I look forward to seeing what else this group produces in the upcoming years.
Now moving to SGA I would first like to make a general statement expressing my appreciation and wonder at the successful year. I was actually mocked by one of the senators (I won't name any names) because of my 'annoyingly' repetitive encouragement and congratulations. Sorry to disappoint, but the teasing has done little to stop my endorsements. I will highlight a few senators who have stood out:
Christian Graziano- Always passionately moving forward, articulating, and representing her constituents, 'Graz' has moved to launch the Book Club and serve various academic and SGA interests. She will make an incredible executive next year as VP of Academic Affairs.
Hugo Jury- Consistently providing healthy dissent, Hugo insists on debate conducive to achieving excellence. An exceptional senator, Hugo hashed out particulars of the constitution, consistently bettering the organization and challenging others.
Leandra D'Eramo- Although I am biased as Lea is my best friend and roommate (oops), I can't help but recognize her hard work in go-green initiatives, food service improvements and insightful discussion points.
Johnny Grenier- Assuming a chair position second semester, Co-Chairing Light the Night, and committing great work within the ethics committee, Johnny is and will be a great asset to senate.
Patrick Ritter- As a freshmen senator, Pat has emerged as an active voice, surely an upcoming powerhouse in senate.
Eric Swindle- In his first year as Director of Student Activities Eric has been a dependable, insightful, and confident advisor for SGA. Our school is very lucky to have him in a transformative year and I am expectant to see where the future of student activities is heading.
Executives- Lastly, but certainly not least, I would like to thank, recognize, and express my appreciation for Meghan Donahue, Jen Gonet, Dan Anastas, and Stephanie Boucher. I am confident to say that this group has effectively represented the student body and professionally advocated to administrators. I have never worked in a group as cohesive, complete, and passionate as this one.
I am confident that the future of change on this campus is in a unified and interconnected net of 'good hands'. Congratulations on a successful year; all the confidence and all the best in the years to come.
Love, Your 'proud parent'
