Establishing Yourself In College

While college has challenged in various ways there are three aspects of college which are important to remember during these challenging times. The first important aspect to remember is the importance of a morning routine, following this is how to start and hold a conversation and to wrap the article together is the keys to happiness.

When it comes to morning routines it can be challenging in the beginning. However, after a few weeks it will become second nature. During the summer, I started waking up at 6am to go work out at the gym. Following this, I then had a quick breakfast and checked my emails and went to work. For those wanting to become more disciplined I encourage you to pick a time that is right for you as well as a good time for when it’s time for you to go to bed. Following this, I recommend you consider creating a schedule from the time you wake up to the time you go to bed. One way to create a schedule for the morning is to make sure you put off checking your phone. After that, stretch your body and drink some water. Then wash your face and make your bed, lastly check your to do list and get after it.

The second aspect you should keep in mind is how to start and hold a conversation. While many of us have lost the skill to connect with one I think this is a skill that is extremely useful in any industry. While there are many aspects why we have difficulty communicating here are a few examples;

  • I have social anxiety, when speaking to others
  • I don’t know what to say

After understanding these two examples it is easy to understand the only way to get better at this is through practice. Through understanding this when you talk with someone it is important to make eye contact with that individual or group and if you are standing make sure to stand up straight to present confidence in yourself. Going off of this, if you do not know what to say, comment on your surroundings from being in class to the weather or the latest sports game. If all else fails, offer a compliment, and be an active listener. After you finish talking make sure to make mental notes about the people you have spoken with and the things about them such as hobbies. Lastly, I recommend you stay up on events going on in the world (I use River News). For those who do not know what this is, it is a mobile app that offers stories from various reliable sources.

The last aspect to consider while starting back up at school is the keys to happiness. Though happiness is not something that we have. It is something that we create in the moments shared with friends to doing things that interest us from playing a sport to watching a Red Sox’s game at Fenway. Breaking off from this, internal happiness is largely affected by what you do inside your head in terms of your thoughts & beliefs. Which brings me to a previous point I made earlier which is the importance of creating a routine. In the morning, I encourage you to ask yourself what you are grateful for. (This can range from something small to something large such as being able to go to college). When you create a schedule you are setting yourself up for success and in turn creating happier thoughts which will help you during the days that are more challenging.

Though college may be different, I encourage you to make the most of your time here as it goes by quick.
