Welcome to Assumption, Class of 2029! As you are nearing the end of your first month of college, here are some tips to keep you motivated for a successful first semester.
1. Go to Office Hours
Whether you need help with an assignment or just have a small question about something from class, professors love interacting with students. It builds connections that can help you in all four years of your college experience; you never know when you might need that letter of recommendation!
2. Reach Out to your COMPASS Facilitators
As a COMPASS Facilitator myself, my job is to set first-year students up for success. If you have any questions about our workshops, we are here to answer them. Don’t be a stranger!
3. Find the Club that Fits You Best
Yes, get involved–but don’t put too much on your plate. Go to meetings for various clubs, and eventually, you will find the one that is the best fit for you. Come to a Provoc meeting too!
4. Go to Campus Events
Assumption offers a wide variety of events throughout the week. Whether playing trivia in the pub, going to a Friday night football game, or attending a club’s late-night event, campus events often provide free food and give you the chance to win big prizes.
5. Join an Intramural Team
Even if you aren’t an athlete, there is an intramural team for everyone. If you don’t have a group of people who want to play, sign up as a free agent. You will meet so many people and immerse yourself in a fun, yet competitive experience.
6. Make a Planner for Your Classes
In addition to using the planners from your COMPASS Workshop, use something from the likes of Google Docs or Sheets to track your assignments. Therefore, you have it when on the go.
7. Connect with Faculty on Campus
There are so many resources for you on campus–from the Denecker Career Development and Internship Center to the Academic Support Center, the staff in these departments can put you on the path to success in so many ways.
8. Find Time to Relax
College is a whole new realm compared to high school. Try and find an hour between classes to take a break and decompress. Watch that show you have been holding off, or play that video game that you love.
It is the hope that these tips will set you up for a successful four years as an Assumption Greyhound. Taking this advice, you will be on the right path to “find your pack.” Keep up the great work, Class of 2029!
