On Oct. 15th, Massachusetts representative in the U.S. House of Representatives Seth Moulton announced he is running against Senator Ed Markey for his U.S. Senate seat.

Moulton, who currently represents Massachusetts’ sixth congressional district, decided to run given the challenges the country is facing.

He stated in his announcement video, “Real people across Massachusetts are being hurt by Democratic leaders refusing to do everything they can to win. We’ve got to look in the mirror and be honest: It’s time for change.”

Markey has been a member of Congress since 1977, and has also been a champion of progressive politics. One of his most notable contributions was cosponsoring the Green New Deal with New York Representative in the U.S. House of Representatives, Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez, in 2019.

The age difference between the two Democrats is noteworthy, as Moulton is 47 and Markey is 79. Many voters have expressed concerns over other older politicians recently running for office.

From former President Joe Biden’s second run for president at the age of 82, to U.S. Senator Mitch McConnell, who has suffered multiple injuries related to his age, many are concerned that Markey’s age will hinder his ability to serve.

In addition, Moulton expressed his own concerns in his announcement video, stating, “Even more, I don’t think someone who’s been in Congress for half a century is the right person to meet this moment and win the future.”

He added, “Senator Markey is a good man, but it’s time for a new generation of leadership, and that’s why I’m running for U.S. Senate.” Moulton also noted how this change in leadership is necessary to combat the challenges Democrats are facing associated with the Trump administration.

Moulton will look to defeat Markey on Nov. 3, 2026, when voters can head to the polls.
