Dethawing Shorts and Flip-Flops

Spring has sprung, or so they say. The annual marking of prolonged sunshine mixed with windy days is upon us.

Truly, it seems hard to remember it is no longer a week in the winter season. Unless you happen to take a look at Assumption’s campus.

No, I am not referring to the buds developing on the trees, or the melting of snow across pathways and athletic fields. I am referring to the dethawing of the springtime wardrobe outfits- the notorious Assumption staple of shorts and flip-flops.

If you laughed at that statement, either you contribute, or you know someone who matches the description. Therefore, let’s talk about it.

When is a socially acceptable time to wear shorts and flip-flops? Truthfully, I will answer with ‘whenever you want.’ Who am I to place a timeline on when one decides to strip their socks off and let loose with their feet in the wind? At the end of the day, you are the one rocking your outfit, and if your outfit consists of shorts and renowned Adidas chanclas with no socks, then Spring has sprung for you indeed.

I argue that It’s a phenomenon. The second the temperature rises above 50 degrees in New England, the flip-flops are dethawed and make an appearance. A ‘heatwave’ to the average Patriot is considered anything above 60 degrees with sun and no wind. Once shorts appear at the forefront of your wardrobe, there is no looking back.

I suppose the most notable factor to consider is why do people care? For example, why am I writing this article? Why does it matter so much that I am taking time out of my day to discuss it to those who dare to read this? Or better yet- why do peers always ask the soul with the brave outfit choice, ‘how are you wearing shorts in THIS weather?’

The answer: we inadvertently admire the bravery that is required. Not social bravery, but physical. Personally, and others may agree, I would be freezing. But if your body keeps you warm, and you are able to start your summertime fun early, then I am jealous in the most admirable way.

Hats off to you my friends, or rather, socks off.
