“Baby You’re a Song, You Make Me Wanna Roll My Windows Down and Cruise.” This infamous line from the phenomenal country band, Florida Georgia Line, in their song ‘Cruise’ truly gets me excited and “amped” for summer time. Released in April 2012, strategically and masterfully right before the summer of that year, for almost a decade and a half this song has been on repeat.
Every beach you go, every golf course you play on, and every BBQ you may attend, ‘Cruise’ to me is the epitome of summer, and the song that gets me going once the last day of school in a respective year is over.
But this year, unlike any other, completing my Freshman year at Assumption in May, ‘Cruise’ has an even deeper meaning. The song, which will literally guide my car-ride home and set the tone for the beginning weeks of my summer, is an anthem to all young people and country music fans. It is the one which will be absolutely BLASTED in my car.
Leaving campus upon my last final with all my clothes and items from the school year packed, as well as knowing that I gave it my all during my first year of college, to me this song is a reward unlike any other.
A reward that proves I have grinded out and competed to the best of my ability in the classroom, as well as socially expanded my circle beyond the comfort of my home. This “cruise” back to Somerville will mean even more for me.
Bringing me back to where it started and where all my love for country music began just a few years prior, the cruise to be united with my friends returning from college and to be home for 4 months of free-will to me is why this song matters so much.
“As that summer sun fell to its knees,” the strong guitar base and the enthusiasm in Tyler Hubbard’s voice gives me the joy and happiness of years of summertime memories. Memories of good times, good people, and good places, may this summer, like every summer, be one that will go down in the record books, Florida Georgia line style.
