Syd Speaks: How to Deal with Change

Great question… I can confidently say that it is still one I am trying to answer for myself; but as I have grown and overcome many different kinds of change, I feel as though I can give you at least some advice on it.
Change is a truly difficult thing – for everyone. But it’s also a natural and universal concept necessary for growth, especially now as we endure college and our life beyond the walls of Assumption.
I have curated a few steps that may be helpful to deal with and overcome change.
The first is to accept the change. Ultimately, to acknowledge that change in any form is inevitable and that with time, big difficult circumstances that are scary now, eventually won’t seem so big anymore.
The second is to remember to prioritize self care. Although the world seems like it’s changing around you, recognize that the only thing you can really control is yourself. Therefore, make sure to take care of yourself, both mentally and physically, to help you manage stressful transitions.
And finally, seek support; whether that be from friends and family members or professionals. There is no shame in seeking help in times of change. The counseling services here at Assumption are also a great resource if you are struggling.
All in all, change is hard, and although it may be unwanted it is also necessary to grow. Give yourself some grace, and remember that the only way you got to where you are today is through change along the way… so don’t shy away from it, but embrace it!
Take care of yourselves,
S
