Being a Commuter and What it Entails

Despite popular belief, being a commuter doesn’t mean that you can’t get involved or connect with the community! As someone who has been a commuter for three years, I can assure you that being a commuter has never hindered my education or college experience.

Ultimately, I chose to be a commuter because one, I only live 20 minutes away and two, I did not want to experience some nightmare roommate situation. Plus, it saves money and I don’t have to worry about packing up and moving my stuff every few months. I also don’t have to deal with all the laundry problems I hear about either.

Some people think college is the time to get away from one’s parents, but I could not imagine that happening right now in my life. I love being able to see my mom everyday. I tell her about what’s happening at school and in return, she tells me about her day at work. I like how I still get to do the simple, everyday things, like grocery shopping, with her.

To classes that take place later in the day, to production for the Provoc, I’m usually on campus more than I’m at my house during the week. I like seeing friends, making my rounds around Founders, and if you haven’t noticed, I usually cover lectures, so those always keep me on campus, too. I’ve also had my fair share of being at Assumption on weekend days, which I don’t mind!

Of course, being a commuter does have its downs. There are definitely times where I wish I could take a nap between classes. I usually have to get up earlier than most of my classmates. On rare occasions, I accidentally leave things at home or lose my lunch bag somewhere (I always find it!). Oh, and dealing with snow isn’t fun either!

With that being said, I wouldn’t change anything about being a commuter. It works for me and I don’t feel like I’m missing out on much. Again, I spend a lot of time on campus anyway. I genuinely want to be here and even despite the early mornings, I always look forward to going to Assumption every day.

Overall, being a commuter has never held me back or created a problem. It’s totally doable to be a commuter and find your place on campus. If anything, Assumption has only encouraged me to get more involved.
