Dear Syd,

I’m halfway through my second semester of college and I feel like I haven’t found my “people” yet. It seems like everyone has found their place here but me. What should I do?

Dearest first year, I can 100% understand the feeling of loneliness when it seems you haven’t found your place or people in college. But I will let you in on a secret… You’re definitely not alone! Chances are a lot of people you know are also feeling the same thing, and maybe this column will help them to find their group… Maybe you’ll even find each other!

I think the biggest advice I can give to you, sweet reader, is to involve yourself in the clubs and activities on campus that you find interest in, whether that may be CAB or intramurals or even the student newspaper ;).

Some of my most dear friends I have made here were from clubs I’ve joined on a whim.

Another resource for finding your niche here is to enthrall yourself in academic activities. A lot of the majors here hold study groups and “get togethers” for students and it’s both helpful and fun to get to know students that are studying the same thing you are.

You’ll also have classes with them until you graduate, so you might as well make some friendships out of it!

Late night programs are also a fun and lowkey way to meet new people and also put yourself out there (not to mention you can usually win some good prizes out of it too!).

Finally, if you have the privilege of living on campus, don’t be afraid to introduce yourself to other students on your floor. RAs hold events each month for their buildings so attend them! Just put yourself out there and be yourself! Say yes to invitations and try new things. Nothing great is ever achieved by staying in your comfort zone!

Your best friends could be out there on this campus, you just have to go out and find them!

Take care of yourself and as always, give yourself grace!
