After years of anticipation, Universal Pictures announced last month the release date of Shrek 5, scheduled for Christmas of 2026. Fans have eagerly waited for this announcement since Shrek Forever After was released in 2010.

Since then, two spinoff films centered on Puss in Boots have come out in 2011 and 2022. The latter one, Puss in Boots: The Last Wish teased the arrival of Shrek 5 at its end with Puss in Boots proclaiming: “Off to find new adventures! And to see some old friends…” as the main characters sailed towards the kingdom of “Far Far Away”.

So far, there has not been official trailer from Universal Pictures, but there is a video announcing some of the main cast members. Mike Myers will be returning to voice Shrek, Eddie Murphy as Donkey, and Cameron Diaz as Fiona. The big announcement was that Zendaya will be voicing Shrek and Fiona’s daughter, who has grown up since the last movies came out.

The film series is known for combining humor with themes of self-acceptance, friendship, love, and gratitude. Fans who grew up with the franchise have come to appreciate the movies more over time because like onions, they have layers.
