for life i wait

i see bones

window frames of the future

i peer outside: the sun does shine

on every tree and every vine

i see bones

bare black bones

they’re sprouting tiny little flowers

collecting droplets of rare showers

i see bones

nailed to the wall

they sing a song i’ve never heard

from any mortal, beast or bird

i see bones

a winged hourglass

the sands fall down, without alarm,

for sister death does them no harm

i see bones

smiling warmly

to the unknown monk who made this art

take my bones too—rearrange every part!

i see bones

they speak to me:

“Lazarus, come out!”

they exclaim with glee

perhaps i am dead now, alas:

for life i wait on the hourglass
