In a stunning and unexpected turn in the game of college admissions, last week, Harvard University announced that they will be offering free tuition to qualifying families. By expanding the pool of those who meet the requirements to far more, Harvard’s stunning reveal reflects a potential change to the entire world of college admissions going forward.

Nationwide, so many students submit applications, dread over SATs, and work as hard as they possibly can throughout high school all to just receive a mediocre financial aid package from their top choice.

Harvard is taking away a lot of the pressure for many families, especially those making $200,000 or less a year. With those families tending to have the greatest struggle budgeting and making their child’s post-secondary academic dreams possible, the Harvard community is revolutionizing and completely redefining the status quo.

Founded in 1636 as an institution for the brightest minds by John Harvard, Harvard University opened its doors to a very select population of students. It was for those who were wealthy, of high class, and able to afford post-secondary education, which was a very slim margin.

Harvard originated as a place where very few people were welcome. However, as education has modernized and the university has developed, Harvard is at a groundbreaking place in the current period, completely changing the way in which students look at their 4 years of college.

From standing out among their competitors within the Ivy League, and being overall, one of the most famous colleges in the world, Harvard is the first of its kind to be this financially accommodating. Hoping that this concept will be utilized by other colleges, this generosity is an inspiration to all students that attending a high level institution is possible.

Additionally, according to Fox News, “…making 100,000 or less per year would qualify for free housing, food, and health services in addition to tuition being covered by the school.” With this, Harvard is truly making it clear that all should have the same chance of wearing the crimson.
