Elon Leaving DOGE?

Rumors have been circulating over the past two weeks that billionaire Elon Musk will be exiting President Trump’s Department of Government Efficiency (DOGE), as soon as the end of May.
Given Musk’s role as a special government employee, he is limited to a 130-day term, but it is possible that he will remain as an employee past the federal limit, given his influence on the President.
According to Politico, Trump has informed those closest to him that Musk will no longer have a close relationship with his cabinet.
As a result of Musk’s controversial behavior during his time with Trump, and the candidate he spent over $20 million losing the open Wisconsin Supreme Court seat, many close to Trump feel that he has become a weight on the administration’s agenda.
Tesla’s major stock crashes serve as another indicator of Musk’s exit, as well as the looming midterm elections. Republicans need to be in good favor with voters to keep their majority in the Congress.
Trump was also quoted saying, “at some point Elon’s gonna want to go back to [Tesla] his company. He wants to. I’d keep him as long as I could keep him” according to Politico.
This decision will be a relief for Democrats, especially in congress, and for federal workers, which DOGE laid off due to Trump’s call for job and federal department cuts.
It is also possible Musk will remain close to Trump in an unofficial capacity. According to the Guardian, Vice President J.D. Vance stated, “DOGE has got a lot of work to do, and yeah, that work is going to continue after Elon leaves, but fundamentally, Elon is going to remain a friend and an adviser of both me and the president.”
Only time will tell when Musk will exit and what the future will hold for both Musk and the Trump Administration.
