Syd Speaks: Halloween Weekend

Dear Syd,
A lot of my friends are dressing up and going out for Halloween this year and want me to go with them. I’m just feeling a bit anxious about going out and dressing up, as I don’t normally go out on the weekends anyway. Do you have any advice on how to navigate this crossroad?
Dear sweet reader,
You’ve come to the right place! I’ve definitely been in your shoes, so I hope my words will bring you some comfort.
I wasn’t much of a “party-goer” myself, my first couple of years of college, as a matter of fact, I never went out once until my junior year.
Halloween, especially, is the most popular weekend to dress up, go out, and maybe do things you’re not completely comfortable with.
I think the most important thing you have to remember in a situation like this is that you have to feel comfortable with where you are and who you’re with.
If going out on Halloween and dressing up and being surrounded by people you don’t really know sounds like something that will cause you immense anxiety, I recommend staying back, clicking on a Halloween movie, and having your own fun.
Funnily enough, there is also a good chance that other people are feeling the same way you do. Find them and do your own thing.
There are also campus events running during Halloween weekend, which can be really fun too. I recommend heading up to The Haunted Hill, a haunted house that Residential Life is running on Nov. 1 – so keep an eye out for that!
But I will tell you, if there’s a part of you that does want to go and experience a “Halloweekend”, then I think you should, and you should embrace it. But be smart!
As always, stay true to who you are.
Remember to give yourself some grace!
