Leaving college without the typical fanfare and buzz around spring graduation season is hard to describe. For me, this has been planned for over a year so it has “hit me” for sure. It has been interesting to be in a reflective mindset this past semester while my friends and peers mostly are not at that point yet. For my last ever contribution to Le Provocateur, I would like to give an honest reflection about my time here and talk about some things I am thankful for in my experience.
The close-knit community of this place has given me a lot to be thankful for. It is easier to build closer relationships when you run into people on campus – without even trying to most of the time. It makes it possible to have one friend group to watch reality TV with, one to go to the gym with, one to play video games with, and one to debate politics with.
I am especially thankful for my original group of friends from living in Hanrahan my freshman year. The “Hanraclan” and I have been there for each other and watched each other grow in our time here. We were especially thankful to revisit the place that brought us all together during this year’s Halloween haunted house.
Being a Catholic school helps the place be full of many high-character people who care for and pray for one another as well. Assumption has given me a place to grow my relationship with God, and brought me people that have helped me mourn the losses of family members. I am especially thankful for the Monday Night Bible Study crew.
The downside to a small school like this is that is can feel very cliquey at times, like a typical high school. Everybody knows everybody, so at times it feels like people are afraid to step out of their comfort zones and branch out. The amount of athletic teams is part of this since naturally people will be close friends with their teammates. The ratio of athletes to non-athletes changes the social dynamics of the school
Assumption’s education itself is undoubtedly excellent. Especially as a liberal arts major, it is noticeable how the classes are designed to fit within the tradition of classical education with professors who care about their jobs.
Overall, I am very grateful for the people I have met and the time I spent at Assumption. It is always bittersweet to move onto the next chapter, but I am ready. You have to be thankful for all of your experiences whether they are reasons to celebrate or to learn from.
For now, give me a call if you need supplemental employee benefit packages from Aflac, or need to buy a house.
