The Peanuts comic strip debuted in 1950 and was created by Charles M. Schultz. In the years that followed, Charlie Brown and his gaggle of friends would become household fixtures. Since 1965, beginning with “A Charlie Brown Christmas,” about fifty specials and films have hit screens worldwide. Most famous are the holiday specials, and below I’ve created a top five ranking of the best fall and winter episodes!
“It’s The Great Pumpkin, Charlie Brown!”
An absolute classic! I hope you all look for the Great pumpkin in the sky every Halloween because I know I do. From Charlie Brown’s ghost costume with far too many holes to Snoopy’s Flying Ace outfit, the gang are dressed to the nines!
“A Charlie Brown Christmas”
Sometimes I wish there was an advice booth on the sidewalk like Lucy’s in A Charlie Brown Christmas. Charlie Brown’s search for the perfect Christmas tree has become a pop culture staple. Every time someone purchases a sparse and less-than-jolly tree, you can bet someone will make a joke comparing it to Charlie’s!
“The Mayflower Voyagers”
Added as a bonus on the “A Charlie Brown Thanksgiving” DVD, “The Mayflower Voyagers” features the Peanuts gang as settlers on the Plymouth Plantation and tells the story of the first Thanksgiving. It originally was a part of the This is America, Charlie Brown series which was a collection of eight episodes detailing American history. It’s not the most popular special, but it is definitely my favorite of the two Thanksgiving movies!
“A Charlie Brown Thanksgiving”
Jelly beans, buttered toast and popcorn make for a delicious Thanksgiving dinner as decided by Snoopy in the holiday special. Although Charlie is stressed (yet again), the day turns out to be one filled with fun, laughter, and his best buddies all followed up by a trip to his grandmother’s house! Plus, we can’t forget the infamous football scene with Lucy and Charlie.
“The Peanuts Movie”
Seeing Charlie Brown and his friends hit the big screen in 2015 was a treat and I find myself going back to this film time and time again. While this film isn’t a holiday special, it does take place in the winter and is one of the best in the series!
Each Peanuts film brings something special to the table and never fails to make me feel warm and fuzzy inside. Whether I pop in a DVD, stream on Apple TV, or catch them live on holiday-eves, watching a Charlie Brown holiday special will always be a staple in my house!
